TEDx Conference Hears Careers Services Must Die [VIDEO] Andy Chan is the Vice President for Personal and Career Development at Wake Forest University and in a TEDx talk he proposes that careers services should die. If you are let down by current careers services or have had a bad experience with them, this talk is a must-watch for you. Andys talk asserted that the typical career service offered at most colleges needs to die. It simply doesn’t address the dynamics of today’s world and students needs. He starts off by saying how he thinks a crowd of angry people is coming universities way. When he speaks to a lot of students, recent graduates and parents, some say the university experience was good but most of them say they are pissed. Because the path from college to employment is so difficult and most of them end up unemployed or under-employed. He then moves on to the topic that I personally am very passionate about. When you interview a freshman, they say they are coming to college to get a better job. Universities say you are going to get great education, be creative, get a broader and global perspective; and all this will prepare you for a rich life and that sounds fantastic. But students are thinking, that’s all good but we hope a good job comes with that, too. So universities are making promises that they are not always fulfilling. And that’s what gets students and graduates angry. He argues that this can be changed. There are three big trends that are building that tidal wave momentum for change. The world of work has changed. It’s nothing like it used to be. The world is flat, there are fewer jobs, the market is competitive, and the race is global. Now  employers say that they are looking at schools and colleges to teach students the right skills. There has been a huge emphasis put on undergraduate programs. The politicians are getting this act and that’s not a good sign. Andy is proposing that careers services should die. Its a very intelligent talk from a careers adviser. As a careers blogger I have argued why current careers advice is useless and why  careers services fail to attract students. HOW HIKING IS NATURAL HEALING THERAPY FOR MENTAL HEALTH CLEAR MINDS No doubt, we have become a society that is addicted to technology. According to eMarketer.com, adults spend over 12 hours and 7 minutes each day consuming media. Our frontal brain is inundated with information! In nature, we are disconnected with technology and connected with the outside world. Thus, our frontal lobe slows and is given much-needed time to rest. At the same time, our cerebellum steps up, inviting creativity and peace. BE PRESENT Without the constant struggle of time and schedules, we are given the opportunity to simply be present in the moment! There are no meetings, kids to tend to, permission slips to sign, or emails to return. Instead, we are provided the opportunity to simply BE WITH WHO WE ARE IN THE MOMENT. What a gift! OUR PERSPECTIVE SHIFTS There is nothing greater than seeing an adult who notices something for the first time. If it’s a cloud that looks like an animal, colorful butterflies, singing birds or a Sundog in the sky. We are given the opportunity, in nature, to view what we otherwise don’t see behind four walls. Emotionally, in the moment, we are allowing ourselves to feel awe. And according to a recent study by UC Berkeley, awe â€" as opposed to joy, pride, amusement, contentment and other positive emotions â€" is the singular sensation that goes the furthest in boosting one’s overall sense of well-being. PROCESS EMOTIONS For our own mental, physical and emotional well-being, we must be able to feel our emotions in order to heal! Yet, this can be scary to do! We fear judgement or shame if we suddenly begin crying or releasing anger. But here’s the thing: Mother Nature doesn’t judge. Allowing ourselves to process emotions while hiking in the forest is so freeing and natural! The Forest and Wilderness becomes our sacred container to release our emotions, while also providing the beauty of a vast world that we live in. Where in the city can you get that? LESSEN PTSD AND ANXIETY I like to think of the world we live in daily as a “created world” filled with concrete, buildings and workplaces. On the opposite spectrum, in my eyes, the “real world” consists of lakes, streams, oceans and mountains. One of these worlds gives us anxiety and stress, the other does not. Allowing our minds to slow and our bodies to live in the present moment is key to our overall health. According to UC Berkeley research, a week after river-rafting, study cohorts reported, on average, a 29 percent reduction in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, a 21 percent decrease in general stress, a 10 percent improvement in social relationships, a 9 percent improvement in life satisfaction and an 8 percent increase in happiness. Here’s the best part of it all: Spending time in Nature does not cost a dime! We can walk to the park, sit under a tree or simply step outside and look into the sky. Thats evident from her schooling, where she decided to study marketing because it was the most creative part of a business degree, and she wanted to follow in her entrepreneurial grandfathers footsteps. Thats evident from her side projects, which started in college and centered around stories.  (I never thought of it as writing, Megan says. Im just a real curious person who likes to ask questions and share what I was learning, and writing was the best catalyst of that.) Thats evident from her current job as the Tech Recruiting Coordinator Lead at Airbnb, where she gets to go to work every day at a company thats doing something that you care about. Thats evident from her kind nature, feeling that being a good human is important above all. Megan is one who follows her evolving curiosities, finding things shes excited about and diving in.
