Employers perceptions of older workers can be skewed, and its a challenge to overcome the ageism found in most industries. The good news is its possible to thrive in your job search and find employment success, if you follow some guidelines developed specifically for older job seekers.6 Resume and Cover Letter Tips for Older WorkersThis is the first in a four-part series of career advice and tips from experts who help older professionals with their job search. Today, our panel of experts discusses their best tips for crafting your resumes and titelseite letters.1) Say goodbye to the past and embrace the future. First, its important to accept that the job search is different, and that the tactics you once used might not still be in practice. Jennifer Fishberg, owner of New Jersey-based Career Karma Resume Development Career Services, says, Adhering to outdated resume conventions, such as limiting yourself to one page or including vague objectives and phrases like references available upon request make it difficult to compete in the current market.2) Dont include your entire work history. A resume doesnt need to include every job youve ever held leaving off older positions is one easy way to avoid aging yourself, as is omitting dates of college graduation, recommends Fishberg. And Deborah Shane, author of Career Transition 5 Steps to Successful Career Reinvention, says, Lead on your resume with your accomplishments and results and dont go farther back then 10 years when listing your jobs so you dont date yourself.3) Customize your resume and cover letter for each job. Ronald Kaufman, author and expert on career transitions, explains that customizing each resume is absolutely necessary f or job search success. Use a Qualifications Summary at the top of your resume, customizing your experience, skills, and traits that are called for in a specific job description, recommends Kaufman.4) Confront ageism head-on in your cover letter or cover email. One way to get around potential age-related discrimination is to confront it openly in your cover letter. Business marketing expert Barry Maher says that older workers should use some of the letter to stress their positives their energy, how they keep current, the value of their experience. Rather than letting an employer turn your age into a negative, dispel their worries and turn your experience, energy, and value into your biggest positives.5) Get some current experience. If youve been working in the same company or position for several years, your experience might actually be seen as outdated. Update your experience byseeking externships to inquire about new job opportunities or new fields of expertise. This will allow you to learn a new field, introduce your skills and expertise or simply to continue to build new relationships with industry professionals, suggests Nikki Trotter, the founder and principal of Careers Cultures, a career and workforce consultancy.6) Consider volunteering to update your experience. 3 ways to stay positive and be happy in your life

3 ways to stay positive and be happy in yur life3 ways to stay positive and be happy in your lifeWeve all received the well-meaning advice to stay positive. The greater the challenge, the mora this glass-half-full wisdom can come across as Pollyannaish and unrealistic. Its hard to find the motivation to focus on the positive when positivity landseems like nothing more than wishful thinking. The real obstacle to positivity is that our brains are hard-wired to look for and focus on threats. This survival mechanism served humankind well back when we were hunters and gatherers, living each day with the very real threat of being killed by someone or something in our immediate surroundings.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThat was eons ago. Today, this mechanism breeds pessimism and negativity through the minds tendency to wander until it finds a threat. These threats magnify the percei ved likelihood that things are going - and/or are going to go - poorly. When the threat is real and lurking in the bushes down the path, this mechanism serves you well. When the threat is imagined and you spend two months convinced the project youre working on is going to flop, this mechanism leaves you with a soured view of reality that wreaks havoc in your life.Maintaining positivity is a daily challenge that requires focus and attention. You must be intentional about staying positive if youre going to overcome the brains tendency to focus on threats. It wont happen by accident.Positivity and your healthPessimism is trouble because its bad for your health. Numerous studies have shown that optimists are physically and psychologically healthier than pessimists.Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania has conducted extensive research on the topic. Seligman worked with researchers from Dartmouth and the University of Michigan on a study that followed people from age 25 to 65 to see how their levels of pessimism or optimism influenced their overall health. The researchers found that pessimists health deteriorated far more rapidly as they aged.Seligmans findings are similar to research conducted by the Mayo Clinic that found optimists have lower levels of cardiovascular disease and longer life-spans. Although the exact mechanism through which pessimism affects health hasnt been identified, researchers at Yale and the University of Colorado found that pessimism is associated with a weakened immune response to tumors and infection.Researchers from the University of Kentucky went so far as to inject optimists and pessimists with a virus to measure their immune response. The researchers found optimists had a much stronger immune response than pessimists.Positivity and performanceKeeping a positive attitude isnt just good for your health. Martin Seligman has also studied the connection between positivity and performance. In one study in particular, he measure d the degree to which insurance salespeople were optimistic or pessimistic in their work. Optimistic salespeople sold 37% more policies than pessimists, who were twice as likely to leave the company during their first year of employment.Seligman has studied positivity more than anyone, and he believes in the ability to turn pessimistic thoughts and tendencies around with simple effort and know-how. But Seligman doesnt just believe this. His research shows that people can transform a tendency toward pessimistic thinking into positive thinking through simple techniques that create lasting changes in behavior long after they are discovered. Here are three things that Ill be doing this year to stay positive.1.Separate fact from fictionThe first step in learning to focus on the positive requires knowing how to stop negative self-talk in its tracks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that - thoughts, not facts.W hen you find yourself believing the negative and pessimistic things your inner voice says, its time to stop and write them down. Literally stop what youre doing and write down what youre thinking. Once youve taken a moment to slow down the negative momentum of your thoughts, you will be more rational and clear-headed in evaluating their veracity.Evaluate these statements to see if theyre factual. You can bet the statements arent true any time you see words likenever, always, worst, ever, etc.Do you reallyalwayslose your keys? Of course not. Perhaps you forget them frequently, but most days you do remember them. Are younevergoing to find a solution to your problem? If you really are that stuck, maybe youve been resisting asking for help. Or if it really is an intractable problem, then why are you wasting your time beating your head against the wall?If your statements still look like facts once theyre on paper, take them to a friend or colleague you can trust, and see if he or she agre es with you. Then the truth will surely come out. When it feels like somethingalwaysorneverhappens, this is just your brains natural threat tendency inflating the perceived frequency or severity of an event. Identifying and labeling your thoughts asthoughtsby separating them from the facts will help you escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive new outlook.2. Identify a positiveOnce you snap yourself out of self-defeating, negative thoughts, its time to help your brain learn what you want it to focus on - the positive. This will come naturally after some practice, but first you have to give your wandering brain a little help by consciously selecting something positive to think about. Any positive thought will do to refocus your brains attention. When things are going well, and your mood is good, this is relatively easy. When things are going poorly, and your mind is flooded with negative thoughts, this can be a challenge. In these moments, think about your day and iden tify one positive thing that happened, no matter how small. If you cant think of something from the current day, reflect on the previous day or even the previous week. Or perhaps there is an exciting event you are looking forward to that you can focus your attention on.The point here is you must have something positive that youre ready to shift your attention to when your thoughts turn negative. Step one stripped the power from negative thoughts by separating fact from fiction. Step two is to replace the negative with a positive.Once you have identified a positive thought, draw your attention to that thought each time you find yourself dwelling on the negative. If that proves difficult, you can repeat the process of writing down the negative thoughts to discredit their validity, and then allow yourself to freely enjoy positive thoughts.3. Cultivate an attitude of gratitudeTaking time to contemplate what youre grateful for isnt merely the right thing to do it reduces the stress hormon e cortisol by 23%. Research conducted at the University of California, Davis, found that people who worked daily to cultivate an attitude of gratitude experienced improved mood, energy and substantially less anxiety due to lower cortisol levels. You cultivate an attitude of gratitude by taking time out every day to focus on the positive. Any time you experience negative or pessimistic thoughts, use this as a cue to shift gears and think about something positive. In time, a positive attitude will become a way of life.Bringing it all togetherI realize these three tips sound incredibly basic, but they have tremendous power because they train your brain to have a positive focus. They break old habits, if you force yourself to use them. Given the minds natural tendency to wander toward negative thoughts, we can all use a little help with staying positive. This article originally appeared on LinkedIn.New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will ersatzdarsteller your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Use Talent Management to Make the Most of your New Hire

Use Talent Management to Make the Most of your New Hire Use Talent Management to Make the Most of your New Hire Use Talent Management to Make the Most of your New Hire Rossheim The story is all too familiar. A sizable company makes half a dozen new hires and their visibility to anyone outside their own department immediately plummets. Over time, even as these employees become bored and discontented, demand for their skills in distant divisions of the company increases dramatically. But opportunities for advancement of both the individuals careers and the companys business are lost in the information void. Happily, with contemporary talent managementsystems that integrate everything from application tracking to succession planning, this story need not repeat itself. Heres what mid-sized and large employers are doing to write a better ending for every new hire. Your ATS should mesh with post-hire tracking. To ensure that you optimize your new hires long-term value, choose an application tracking system (ATS)thats compatible with talent management tools. ATSs by and large can track post-hire activities, says Marilyn Sherief, product manager for Talent Management Suitein Maynard, Mass. Full integration offers better value. When TMS functions dont come integrated, they make a misnomer of talent management system theyre unmanageable and they arent truly a system. Not all talent-management systems are integrated with the ATS, says Erin Osterhaus, managing editor at Software Advice in Austin, Texas. Sometimes talent management is just tacked on. When its an integrated system, it works a lot more smoothly and there are fewer bugs. Its much quicker to learn; its easier for the users to figure out whats going on. Look for robust onboarding functionality. Onboarding solutions should have forms management for compliance and automation of administrative processes, IT to get new employees set up, and so on, says Madeline Laurano, research director of talent acquisition solutions in Aberdeen Groups human capital management research practice in Boston. Unify information on each employee. Make sure all stakeholders populate your TMS with relevant information on each new hire. From the onboarding stage, the entire purpose of a talent management system is to streamline the process and put all the info about the new employee in one place, says Osterhaus. The HR person has access to that information, the hiring manager can leave notes and also see what the recruiter has said about the then-candidate. Use TMS to document employees full range of skills. During the first week, have a broad discussion with new hires that goes beyond their qualifications for the job they just started. Day one on the job offers an incredible opportunity for the employer to take inventory of skill sets that may not have been interviewed for, but the new employee has them and they may be of value to the company, says Paul Rubenstein, leader of product strategy for talent solutions at Aon Hewitt . Deliver, document common core of company knowledge. Use your TMS to bootstrap employee learning. Training and development can be incorporated and tracked with a TMS, even beginning with onboarding, says Sherief. For example, some companies have new hires go through a learning module on privacy policy and procedures to make sure new hires are managing the sharing of information in a way that doesnt compromise that information. Track achievements as a basis for succession planning. Treat each new hireas a potential key executive. Integrated performance management makes succession planning a lot easier, says Osterhaus. You can see how employees have grown from the beginning, whos grabbed opportunities, whos a go-getter. Give employees access to their information. Employees should be granted access to TMS information on themselves wherever possible, from employee performance evaluationsto internal job openings they may choose to pursue. When the TMS is accessible by employees, they can see their options for training, for example, says Osterhaus. This helps retention because employees feel they can grow with the company. For higher retention, chart a development path. A TMS can help lay out a path for ongoing education and training, starting out with foundational skills for the company, says Rubenstein. Just the act of setting that path sends a message about the companys investment in the employee. That message will persist for a good period and will ultimately be reflected in better employee retention. Systemize recognition to boost retention. Make sure that each time an employee is formally recognized, that recognition is tracked, facilitated and shared, wherever appropriate, through the TMS. Recognition is becoming very big in talent management, says Laurano. Look for a social recognition function that enables sharing of achievements. Talent management tools help with recognition and engagement, which in turn help with retention.

80 rule of effective thinking

80 rule of effective thinking The 20/80 rule of effective thinking How much time should I spend thinking instead of doing? It’s one of the biggest questions I struggle with. One side of me says, “Without doing you will never achieve anything.”Another side says, “Without thinking things through, you might end up doing the  wrong  things.”Thinking by itself is worthless because if you never do anything, what’s the use? And if you only act without thinking, you’ll probably end up in jail or in a ditch. That’s why this topic is so important. But most of us never even consider living by a thinking/doing ratio.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  I live by a 20/80 ratio.  Before I explain why that is, and how you can create your  own  ratio, let’s look at some of the most respected individuals of our time: Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, two investors who are celebrated for their  good decisions  and thinking processes. They are not only thinkers, but they are also successful  practitioners.?“What Are You  Doing?”It’s well-known that Warren Buffett spends most of his time reading and thinking. It’s the first thing he does when he comes to his office in Omaha. According to his biographer,  Alice Schroeder, Buffett reads at least 5 hours a day. He reads newspapers, magazines, annual reports, and books. To many people, reading looks like inactivity. There’s nothing active about reading. And from the outside, it looks like you’re not doing anything.I think that’s the first problem with the challenge we’re addressing in this article. Our western society is biased towards doing. Just think about how often people ask you this question: “What are you  doing?”You probably heard it at school. And you probably hear it at work or at home all the time. People want to DO something at all times. Activity is the key.My guess is that the thinking/doing ratio at most organizations is something like 10/90. We spend far more time doing than thinking. If we take a lesson out of Buffett and Munger’s book, we can say that’s not an effective ratio.According to Peter Bevelin, author of  Poor Charlie’s Almanack, Buffet and Munger have a “habit of committing far more time to learning and thinking than to doing.”That means the ratio these guys have is more like 80/20- thinking/doing. To be clear, I’m only guessing here but by the looks of it, that’s the ratio Buffet and Munger have. What’s Your Nature? So should we  all  spend 80% of our time thinking? It depends on two factors: Your nature Your work Some people are natural thinkers. They love to spend time in their heads. They love to read. And they love to talk about ideas. There are also people who hate that. The lesson here is that everyone is different. You’re probably someone who likes to think, otherwise, you would not read this article. A person who only acts and never thinks will not take five minutes to read this. But the  amount  of thinking we need also depends on our work. Warren Buffett is a value investor. He makes very few decisions. But when he does, he makes  huge  decisions and large bets. Outside of investing, there are few professions like that. Most of us need more execution. We need to make calls, write emails, have meetings, and create things. So even though I’ve found an ideal ratio that works for most people (which I’ll talk about later), remember to always look at your nature and your work. Your ideal ratio depends on those two things. But what about people who don’t like to think and want to  do   more?Writing 500 Books In 42 YearsIsaac Asimov is considered one of the most prolific writers of the 21st century. His first book,  Pebble in the Sky, was published in 1950.By the time he passed away in 1992, he had written about  500 books. Sure, some of his books were very short, but still, it’s an impressive bibliography. That comes down to about one book per month. That’s a lot of  doing. It seems like there was very little inactivity in his life during those years. He cranked out one book after the other. It almost looks like his ratio was 100% doing. He could probably think and do AT THE SAME TIME. Most of us are not like that. We do either one or the other.Be DecisiveWe’ve looked at two extreme cases. Buffett and Munger spend most of their time thinking. Asimov spent most of his time doing. Unfortunately,  outliers do not represent reality. However, we can learn from them. What I’ve learned is that we need to be decisive.Warren Buffett would not be this famous if he did n’t make big bets. And Asimov wouldn’t write 500 books without committing to writing every day. The lives of both men were different, but both were decisive in their actions. And that’s the key to figuring out your ideal thinking/doing ratio. It’s not the amount of thinking we do, it’s the  quality  that matters. If you spend 40% of your time thinking while being indecisive and all over the place, you’re wasting your time.In contrary, if you spend only 1% of your time thinking and if you are very decisive,  you’re being effective. The 20/80 Rule Of Effective ThinkingI live by what I call “The 20/80 rule of effective thinking.” I think for most professionals in today’s age, that ratio of thinking vs doing is sufficient. Even though I’m a natural thinker, I need to remind myself to execute more than I  think.Again, it’s not the ratio that counts, it’s the  quality  of your thinking. And ultimately, the quality of your thinking impacts the outcomes you achieve.R emember that poor outcomes in life are excusable but poor thinking and decision-making are not.The reason is that you do not have any control over the former- but you do have  all  the control over the latter. That’s why the 20/80 ratio will probably save you a lot of time, money, and worry. When you take time to think things through, you’re less likely to make emotional decisions. When you’re decisive, you make a decision and  stick  to it- which is ultimately how we achieve our goals. This article originally appeared on Darius Foroux. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Why its important to separate your self worth from your money

Why it's important to separate your self worth from your money Why it's important to separate your self worth from your money As a financial coach, I hear from a lot of people who beat themselves up because of their financial situation. They are stressed out about money and they blame themselves. They feel embarrassed, ashamed, isolated, and stupid for the situation they are in. And it’s normal to feel that way; it’s often easier to be angry at ourselves, rather than figure out what we need to do to make big changes. Plus, financial problems are still pretty taboo in our society, and we’re often told that we’re to blame if we have debt or other issues. But this kind of negative self-talk can be damaging beyond the bank account. It can lead to shame, hopelessness, depression, and even suicide. This month is  Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, so I want to take today talk about why you should try to separate your self worth from your money.Your Net Worth Doesn’t Determine Your Self WorthIt might be easy to forget when you’re out there reading blogs and scrolling through Instagram, but your net wor th does not determine your worth as a human. Your worthiness does not rely on how much money you have in the bank or how much debt you’ve paid off. It also isn’t reflected in how much cute stuff you own or how often you travel. Not only will you feel like shit if you rely on your financial standing to feel good about yourself, but it may even discourage you from making positive changes. If you think that you’re bad with money and that you’ve always been bad with money, you will have no desire to move forward. You’ll continue to feel bad about yourself and beat yourself up, and feel incapable of making changes.Your Past Mistakes Don’t Define YouJust because you’ve made mistakes with your money (or any other part of your life) in the past, doesn’t mean you’re bad with money or a bad person. It’s important to separate who you are as a person from your past behaviors. If you define yourself based on what you’ve done in the past, shame will overwhelm you. You’ll be stuck and paralyzed in a negative loop. On the flip side, if you recognize that you want to behave differently, you If you see the possibility that you can make changes for yourself, you’ll be more motivated to make them.Your Well Being is More Important Than Your MoneyI’ve seen many people toil away in toxic workplaces, or in bad relationships, because they think it’s the more responsible thing to do. Perhaps they would have to take a pay cut if they changed jobs, or they’d have to pay higher rent if they left their relationship. These are understandable worries to have! Money and being able to afford your life is no joke. But constant unhappiness is no joke either.Earlier this year, I was giving a presentation to a group of female bartenders and one person raised their hand and said, “I know giving up Lyft would save me money, but I work until 3am and it’s the only way I feel safe getting home.” And this is so true! It’s okay to spend money that helps you protect or take care of yourself. The same is true for things like therapy, hiring a coach, eating healthy food, or paying for a gym membership. Don’t beat yourself up for spending money on the things that improve your overall safety and well being. If you don’t believe me about separating your worth from your money, take it from  Brené Brown:This blog post is part of the 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Awareness Month blog tour. Your mother was right: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. No one is going to pay you thousands of dollars to do something that a machine could do for pennies. So ignore any ads that promise you a six-figure income for stuffing envelopes, entering data, or assembling kits. 2. You have to pay money to get started. Legitimate employers pay you, not the other way around. If the ad mentions paying a fee to get started, it’s a scam. Some legitimate work-from-home job boards do charge a monthly fee to access listings, but you won’t find their ads tucked into listings on other job sites. 3. They want a lot of personal data right off the bat. Real employers don’t need your bank account information and social security number before you’ve even been offered a job. If you’re asked to give up this information, the product is you and the service is identity theft. 4. The employer has no digital footprint. At this point, nearly all employers have websites and social media presences. If you can’t find the company by Googling â€" or if the information you find is presented in a less than professional manner â€" beware. 5. The company’s URL seems off. Don’t trust links embedded in job ads. Go to the corporate website and navigate your way to the ad. If you can’t find it, look at the URL again. Does it seem … slightly off? Scammers often buy up URLs similar to those of legitimate businesses. So, you might think you’re applying for a job at XYZ Corp (URL: XYZCorp.com). But the scammy listing will ask you to go to XYZCorp.jobs.com â€" which will turn out to be a funnel into a work-at-home scam. Review these top 10 warning signs that indicate a job may be a scam. Examples of Job Scams Now you know what you’re looking for in general terms. But will you recognize a fraudulent work-at-home ad when you run across it in real life? These real ads from scammers will give you a sense of what you’ll see in an “opportunity” that isn’t. The “Get Paid Every Day” Scam $1000 A Day From HomeAutomated - No SalesCash Money Every DayGet Paid Daily via ATM Expand The “Part-Time Work for Overtime Wages” Scam Work from Home Part TimeEarn $10K or more a month Expand The part-time job ad had a disclaimer in a tiny font at the bottom of the page which said there is risk involved and you might not do as well. The might not do as well part was repeated at least four times in the disclaimer. If you think about it logically, the chances of making money doing a minimal amount work simply arent high â€" other than, perhaps, for the people making money scamming others. Again, think twice before you click on anything that sounds too good to be true â€" it is. Find Company Information If youre still not sure - and remember, companies can be very creative about how they advertise their opportunities because they want you to think that the position is legitimate - there are places to research work-at-home jobs at legitimate companies. Better Business Bureau (BBB): Enter the company name or the website into the Better Business Bureau search box to find out whether there have been complaints and whether the company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau. I entered the name of a company I was interested in and found there had been seven complaints, all of which were unresolved.?Federal Trade Commission (FTC): The FTC provides information on commission actions. For example, operators of online malls that disguised themselves as legitimate business opportunities settled Federal Trade Commission charges that they were illegal pyramid schemes. Be wary and be careful. Despite the best efforts of computer systems and staff, its hard for job sites to stop work-at-home scams from being posted. Posters are creative and sophisticated and are continually coming up with new ways to advertise their information. How to Report a Work-at-Home Scam If you uncover a work-at-home scam â€" whether you identify it right off the bat or extricate yourself after the fact â€" you can help prevent other workers from being taken in. Report the scam, and do your part to make job searching a little safer for everyone. File a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center or the FTC, report the company to the Better Business Bureau, or report a phishing scam to Google. But speak up: if you were fooled, even for a moment, others will be, too.

Training Management Resources

Training Management Resources Training Management Resources Employee training is a process focused on communicating with and teaching an employee information and/or instructions. The purpose of employee training is to improve the employees performance or to help the employee gain a necessary level of knowledge and skill to productively, effectively, and profitably perform his or her job.A commitment to employee training and development by an employer is one of the significant factors in an employee’s choice of employers and jobs. It is important in predicting whether your organization is likely to retain an employee after hire. Employee training is also a key factor in employee motivation as well as in employee retention. The opportunity for your employees to continue to grow and develop job and career-enhancing skills is integral to an employee’s happiness and satisfaction with their job. In fact, this opportunity for employees to grow and develop through training is one of the most important factors in employee motivation, engagement, and positive morale. And employee training and development or opportunities to train others are integral components in half of the 18 factors that contribute to reducing employee turnover. Your best employees, the employees you most want to keep, thrive when they have the opportunity to grow through employee training and development options.Employee Training and Development SecretsThere are a couple of secrets about what employees want from training opportunities, however. T hese need to guide you as you consider your options for providing employee training. These two factors are key if you want to multiply the value of the employee training and development you provide. You need to:Allow employees to pursue training and development in directions they choose, not just in company-assigned and needed directions. Both are needed and recommended.Have your company support learning, in general, and not just in support of the knowledge needed for the employee’s current or next anticipated job. Recognize that the key factor is keeping the employee interested, attending, and engaged in a learning organization environment.Employee Training OptionsEmployee training opportunities are not just found in external training classes and seminars. They are also found in the content of the employee’s job and responsibilities, in internal training opportunities, and finally, through external training opportunities whose impact you can magnify by the activities, you pursue before during and after the employee training. These ideas emphasize what people want in employee training and development. They also articulate your opportunity to create devoted, growing employees who will benefit both your business and themselves by the employee training opportunities you provide.Employee Training Options: Job Content and ResponsibilitiesYou can have a significant impact on an employee’s training and development through the responsibilities in an employee’s current job. The content of the job, what the employee does regularly on the job, is also an important factor in employee training and professional development. These are ideas about how you can provide employee training through the job the employee performs.Expand the job to include new, higher level responsibilities that help the employee stretch his skills. Reassign responsibilities that the employee does not like, that are routine and that the employee may have been doing for a long time. (They may help another employee stretch and grow while alleviating boredom for the employee in question.)Provide more authority for the employee to self-manage and make decisions. These chances to self-manage will help the employee spread her wings and fly.Invite the employee to contribute to more important, department or company-wide decisions and planning.Provide more access to attend the more important and desirable meetings.Provide more high-level information by including the employee on specific email lists, in company briefings, and in your confidence.Provide more opportunity for the employee to participate in the process of establishing goals, priorities, and measurements.Assign reporting staff members to his or her leadership or management position. You can make the employee grow professionally through managing coworkers as a boss.Assign the e mployee to head up projects or teams to further develop leadership skills. Enable the employee to spend more time with his or her boss. The time spent in mentoring, sponsoring and coaching with the boss will expand the employee’s skills.Provide the opportunity for the employee to cross-train in other roles and responsibilities.Employee Training Options: Internal Training and DevelopmentEmployees appreciate the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills without ever leaving work or the workplace. Internal training and development bring a special plus. The examples used, the terminology and the opportunities for discussion reflect the culture, environment, and needs, of your workplace in a way that external training does not offer.Enable the employee to attend an internally offered training session. This session can be offered by a coworker in an area of their expertise or by an outside presenter or trainer. With the external provider employee training is improved if the person has the opportunity to know your organization and culture.Ask the employe e to train other employees with the information learned at a seminar or training session. Offer the time at a department meeting or lunch to discuss the information or present the information learned to others. (Make this an expectation in your organization when employees attend external training and conferences.) Perform all of the activities listed before, during, and after a training session to ensure that the learning is transferred to the employee’s job.Purchase business books for the employee. Sponsor an employee book club during which employees discuss a current book and apply its concepts to your company.Offer commonly-needed training and information on an intranet, an internal company website so employees can pursue the information as needed and wanted, conveniently and from their laptop.Provide employee training by either knowledgeable employees or an outside expert in a brown bag lunch format. Employees eat lunch and gain knowledge about a valuable topic. Some ideas include: investing in a 401(k), how to vary and balance investments, tips for public speaking, how to get along with the boss, how to get along with a difficult coworker, how to increase productivity and provide updates on new products that make work easier. These opportunities for employee training are unlimited; youl l want to survey employees to pinpoint their interests. The developers and other interested employees at a medium sized company put on a day long conference with lunch and all of the trappings of an external conference at a local conference center. Attended by interested employees, the conference sessions were almost all taught by internal staff on topics of interest to their internal audience. Picture an external day long conference and youll see the opportunity. Employees were pumped up beyond belief; they learned and enjoyed the day and gained a new respect for the knowledge and skills of their co-workers.Employee Training Options: External Training and DevelopmentTo help employees develop new skills and bring new ideas into your organization, employee attendance at external training is a must. Attaining degrees and university attendance also enhance the knowledge and capabilities of your staff while broadening their experience with diverse people and ideas.Pay for memberships in external professional associations with the understanding that employees will attend meetings, read the journals, and so forth and regularly update coworkers.Enable the employee to attend an external seminar, conference, speaker, or training event. (Remember to ask him to share the new knowledge with coworkers to help you develop a learning organization.)Perform all of the activities listed before, during, and after a training session to ensure that the learning is transferred to the performance of the employee’s job.Pay for the employee to take online classes and identify low or no cost online (and offline) training opportunities.Provide a flexible schedule so the employee can take the time to attend university, college, or other formal educational sessions.Provide tuition assistance to encourage the employees pursuit of additional employee training and education. As you can see from the breadth and depth of employee training opportunities, the ways in which you can provide your e mployees the chance to grow and develop are limited only by your imagination. By your commitment to enabling your employees to continue to develop, you partner with employees to build their strengths and increase their ability to contribute to your organization. A win for all - for sure. The development of a life-long engaged learner is a positive factor for your organization no matter how long the employee chooses to stay in your employ. Use these employee training options to ensure that you optimize the employees motivation and potential retention.New Employee Onboarding and OrientationEmployee training that is crucial in bringing a new employee up-to-speed as quickly as possible is known as employee onboarding or new employee orientation. It starts when you welcome the new employee to your organization and continues until the employee is proficiently performing the new job. These resources will help you announce the arrival of new employees and formulate and implement a successful onboarding process.More About Training and DevelopmentTips for Weekly Training14 Ways to Develop EmployeesPowerful Management Training

The Critical Need for 5G Cellular Service

The Critical Need for 5G Cellular Service The Critical Need for 5G Cellular Service The Critical Need for 5G Cellular Service In northern Lapland, snow stays on the ground from October to May. Travel conditions can be bad. Even when the roads are plowed, they can be so icy that some people prefer reindeer to get around. In such an environment, knowing what the driving conditions are for the next mile of road can be critically important. Andwhat knows those conditions better than the car travelingthat road? Engineers explore using the 5G mobile network to improve road safety. Image: VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland Researchers from the VTT Technical Research Institute in Espoo, Finland, are experimenting with ways to relay real-time sensor information from car-to-car. In the coming months, they will be running two carsone manned and another autonomouson an icy track to see how the vehicles share data on road conditions via a new, advanced cellular data transmission system called 5G. The goal is to use 5Gs blazing speed and low-latency features to get critical data from every car on the road to every other vehicle, all in order to reduce the chances of collision, improve road safety, and save lives. Top ASME.org Story: 5 Ways How Digital Farm Technology Is Transforming Agriculture Editors Pick: How Engineers Can Resolve Conflict and Save Their Business The term 5G is just a shorthand for the fifth generation of cellular mobile communications technology, dating from an analogue system first deployed in 1979. With the first 3G network introduced in 1998 and 4G networks in 2008, a new set of mobile network technologies is overdue. Compared to 4G, 5G handles smaller packets of data efficiently for machine-to-machine communication with real-time exchange of data between devices and sensors. For instance, VTT researchers estimated 5G time lag at 1 millisecond, compared to 10 to 20 milliseconds for 4G. The standard was adopted only in December 2017 and may take years to fully implement, but 5G is already at our doorstep. A fast and high-bandwidth radio called 5G-NR for mobile devices and computers is now being tested. 5G smartphones will be available later this year. Verizon Wireless has already announced a 5G home internet service about 50 times faster than the average wired home connection. The true impact of 5G wont be felt until engineers start finding new applications for the technology, especially in autonomous vehiclesconsidered a rich field for development thanks to the massive data flow generated by cameras and sensorsand the billions of IoT-enabled devices expected to be marketed in the next decade. Although the 5G cellular standard is relatively new, all major car makers plan to implement the technology in connected cars in the coming years. VTTs major challenge is supplementing 5G cell phone infrastructure with safety services, especially for winter driving. We can have services providing warnings if there is a collision, obstacles, or slippery road conditions ahead. Then automated vehicles can plan its actions, said Tiia Ojanper, senior scientist and project manager at VTT. Those are the kind of services we are piloting in the project. Read Part 2 to learn why 5G is the right technology to handle such critical and data-rich services. Agam Shah is an independent technology writer in New York City.
